Communication problems in later dementia

It is common for people in the later stages of dementia to have communication problems.

They may have difficulty with speaking and conveying their emotions.

They may also lose the ability to speak altogether. It is important that if this should happen to your loved one that they do not feel alone.

When someone loses the power to communicate it can make them feel very distressed but there are ways for them to communicate their feelings to you.

If you can recognise some non-verbal ways of communicating with them, it will benefit them greatly. You can use these ways of communicating to help and support them. These may include expressions, touching, gestures and many other things.

As everyone is different, everyone finds different ways of communicating after they find it difficult to speak. It is important that you pay attention to their body language and their gestures so that you may be able to pick up ways they are trying to use.

Many nursing homes and care homes have found ways of using this form of communicating to make sure that the people they care for are still happy. It can be a great tool to find out whether a person needs anything or if they are comfortable.

If your loved one is in a care home, then speaking with the staff to find out ways of using this tool is a great way to learn how to use it most effectively.

Just remember, just because your loved one can no longer speak, it doesn't mean that they are not trying to communicate. London Dementia Care offer professional dementia care at home for clients throughout London. Please complete our enquiry form for more information.
