Symptoms specific to vascular dementia

Vascular dementia is one of the most common forms of dementia. The symptoms of vascular dementia can sometimes develop suddenly and get worse quickly. Although, they can also develop gradually over many months or years.

What separates vascular dementia from other forms of dementia is that person with vascular dementia may also experience stroke like symptoms. This can include; muscle weakness or paralysis on one side of their body.

Vascular dementia is estimated to affect more than 135,000 people in the UK. The term dementia describes the loss of mental ability and so there are many forms of dementia, vascular dementia being one of the most common. Any form of dementia is rare in anyone younger than 65.

Vascular dementia is caused by the reduced blood flow to the brain, which begins to damage brain cells and eventually kills them. The signs and symptoms of vascular dementia include;

  • Difficulty With Planning
  • Slowness Of Thought
  • Trouble With Language
  • Mood Or Behavioural Changes
  • Problems with Attention And Concentration

If your loved one is experiencing any of the symptoms above, then do get them to their GP as quickly as possible. There is no cure for dementia but there is help and support for people with it. Your GP will be able to help you get the support that they need.

The symptoms of dementia can be treated and controlled, without this treatment they may continue to get worse.
